How is Cubic/Volumetric Weight Calculated ?

Cubic or volumetric weight is used to determine the chargeable weight of a shipment, especially when the space occupied is more significant than the actual weight. In Australia, the calculation varies by transport mode:

  • Air freight EXPRESS: 167
  • Express freight: 250
  • International Courier: 200
  • General Freight: 333
  • Sea Freight: 1000

Air Freight (EXPRESS COURRIER MODE)

  • Formula: (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5,000
  • Example: A package measuring 120 cm × 80 cm × 50 cm would have a volumetric weight of 160 kg.

Air Freight (AIR CARGO)

  • Formula: (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 6,000
  • Example: A package measuring 120 cm × 80 cm × 50 cm would have a volumetric weight of 80 kg.

Sea Freight

  • Formula: (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 1,000

  • Example: The same package would have a volumetric weight of 960 kg.
  • For Full Container Load (FCL) shipments, a per-container charge replaces the volume-based charge.

Road Freight

  • Formula: Varies by carrier and location.
  • Some carriers use a 1 cubic metre = 250 kg standard.
  • Always check with your specific carrier for their density ratio.

The price is determined by cubic or weight, whichever is higher.
